Living by the Sea recorded the story of Jia Qingyun and his family, who moved back to his hometown in Shandong due to the difficulties of their life in the Northeastern. Although it had been the home of his ancestors, the family now had no land of their own and no residence or house. By the sea, Jia Qingyun and his wife and their three children have to muster the courage to face the challenges of building new life.
