体型较大者为长戟大兜虫雄虫

长戟大兜虫又名海克力斯大兜虫，成虫体长可达180毫米，是全世界最大的甲虫。力量极大，可以携带自身体重350倍的物体，因此以希腊神话中的大力士海克力斯命名。一般所称的“独角仙”即是此种。但其实正式的独角仙指的应该是叉犀金龟属、双叉犀金龟和其的六个亚种。

长戟大兜虫属完全变态，幼虫期约1-1.5年，长度可达180毫米，重量可达150克。幼虫期之后会化蛹，羽化之后的成虫以树汁或腐烂的水果和甲虫啫喱为食。

长戟大兜虫两性异型:

雄虫有犄角，可分为头角与胸角。 雌虫无犄角。
